The preparation of high-level swimmers is divided into 3 or 4 complete training macrocycles.
Each macrocycle, divided into four mesocycles (or periods), is aimed at the best possible performance of the athlete. The overall duration of the macrocycle is 10 - 18 weeks.
Each mesocycle is in turn divided into microcycles lasting between 3-4 days and a week.
The programming criteria described are summarized in the Table:

Structuring training into three or four macrocycles during the year helps in training control because it allows you to:
-
Evaluate the athlete's responses more frequently.
-
Correct any errors in setting the program and the relationship between load and recovery.
-
Avoid subjecting the athlete to prolonged periods of load with the risk of overtraining.
-
Make greater use of the training effect of competitions.
